At CinemaCon in Las Vegas yesterday, the first footage from the upcoming film Annihilation was released to the press in attendance. The upcoming film is the follow-up effort for director Alex Garland after the success of his independent science-fiction hit Ex Machina and stars Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson and Oscar Isaac. The film is based on the novel written by Jeff VanderMeer. Possible future podcast material!

The story for the novel (book #1 of the Southern Reach trilogy) follows an expedition of four women (a biologist, a psychologist, a anthropologist and a surveyor) who have been chosen to enter Area X, an area that has been cut-off from the continent for decades due to nature reclaiming what is naturally hers. These four women are expedition #12, as those who have returned from the previous 11 expeditions have died in odd and surprising ways.

The footage released at CinemaCon was said to have “stunned audiences” who were lucky enough to be in attendance. There are definitely high hopes for this one as the names of Natalie Portman and Oscaar Isaac are attached, to go along with this film being the follow-up to the critically-acclaimed Ex Machina, Alex Garland will be held to high standards to say the least. The novel also won the Nebula Award for Best Novel and the Shirley Jackson Award for Best Novel in 2014.

Let the hype train for this one begin!

The film was originally slated for release sometime this year, but according to Collider’s Steven Weintraub, the film has been pushed back to a 2018 release.
